Objectives -

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Learn about the federal Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act that was passed.
  • Learn what is required for an exposure control plan.
  • Learn what are the best ideas for getting doctors and nurses to try new safety devices.
  • Find out options to comply with OSHA request that multi-use blood drawing sets no longer be used.
  • Discover how to find out about the newest safety products.
  • Learn how to track sharps injuries and comply with reporting regulations.
  • Understand how to get such departments as anesthesiology, surgery and pediatric involved with clinical product evaluations.
  • Review over 100 safety medical devices and discuss them.
  • Learn how to get administrative and purchasing office support.
  • Understand how to work with purchasing contracts that do not provide the devices that your clinicians would like.
  • Acquire the skills to work with clinicians who refuse to use safety devices.
  • Get information on how to identify, evaluate and select safety devices in 14 different function categories such as lancets, IM injectable, I.V. connectors, etc.
  • Learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of safety medical devices.
  • Get information on several methods of training staff concerning safety devices.
  • Learn about OSHA's BBP inspection methods.

This program has consistently garnered a satisfaction rating of 4.8 out of a possible 5.0. Over 80% of the participants have been infection control practitioners.
